Question/Problem: I'm trying to install WhatsUp Professional and I'm receiving a MSDE-2000 component (code 1603) Setup was unable to configure MSDE or MSDE-2000 component (code 1639) Setup was unable to configure MSDE error message. The install quits after I respond to the error. I do not have a previous version of WhatsUp Professional installed.

Answer/Solution: In certain environments, the Microsoft Desktop Engine component may encounter errors during installation. To workaround these problems, it is recommended that you manually install MSDE and then, install WhatsUp Professional.

The MSDE 2000 Service Pack 3a install can be downloaded from:
Microsoft Desktop Engine - Service Pack 3a.

  1. Download the archive containing the MSDE install and extract it to a temp folder. The following instructions assume that the temp folder is C:\Temp.
  2. Open a command prompt and navigate to C:\Temp.
  3. Enter setup SAPWD=wug_sa INSTANCENAME=WHATSUP DISABLEROLLBACK=1 TARGETDIR="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\" DATADIR="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$WHATSUP\Data\" /L*v "C:\MSDELog.log" and execute it.
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Install WhatsUp Professional and restart the server again if prompted.

If you wish to install the MSDE application files or WhatsUp database files in a different directory, you can change the paths listed in the TARGETDIR and DATADIR parameters.

The manual installation of MSDE 2000 may install the SQL Manager tray icon. It is recommended that you disable automatic launching of this application by removing the Service Manager shortcut from the All Users startup folder located in:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup.

It is recommended that you apply the MS03-031 patch once installation is complete. You can download the update from:
SQL Server Update for July 2003 - Security Bulletin MS03-031.
