Question/Problem: I have WS_FTP, now how do I build my website? Answer/Solution: WS_FTP can transfer the files that make up your web site to a host computer or Web Server on the internet. Here is a page with more information about: FTP -- the File Transfer Protocol The following are some examples of tools that you will need, besides WS_FTP, in order to create your website. Common Website building tools: 1. Notepad - comes packaged with any Windows version. Most likely you will find it by taking Start --> Programs --> Accessories. You can build your website using Notepad, or any text editor. The only down side is, that in order to use it, you will need to learn about what they call, "Markup language." There are a variety of different markup languages to use, such as HTML, XHTML, DHTML or XML and Java. Keep in mind that learning any of these languages can become very time consuming -- beneficial, but perhaps not worth your while if all you want is a simple website with a minimal amount of hassle. If you are interested in seeing what HTML
looks like, click your right mouse button in any "blank" area
of this page and select the "View Source" option if you are using
Internet Explorer; if you are using Netscape use "View Page Source". Don't get us wrong ... learning about the languages above is a must if you're planning on getting serious about Web Development, and learning a little bit about HTML will certainly be helpful even if you're not, however taking the time to learn all there is to know about them it is not mandatory, by any means. Nowadays, there are user-friendly applications called HTML editors, which make building websites easier and more fun. What they do is to write all that nasty code (that you just saw with "View Source") for you. This leads us to the more advanced yet simpler-to-use programs used for website construction... 2. Microsoft FrontPage 2000/XP - FrontPage is a popular HTML editor, developed by Microsoft, and we recommend it if you are a beginner. (If you are familiar with Microsoft Word then you'll feel pretty comfortable using this program.) Front Page typically comes on the Microsoft Office CD. If you are at work you may have it installed already. If not, ask someone in your IT department if they can install it on your computer. 3. Dreamweaver MX - Dreamweaver is one of the more popular HTML editors today for intermediate or advanced users. It is developed by a company called MacroMedia, which also develops a product called Flash, which you may have heard of. Keep in mind there is a bit more of a learning curve to it, but it is very robust and can perform many operations in seconds that might take hours for a beginner writing raw HTML. You can download a 30-day evaluation copy by clicking here. Back to WS_FTP and its role in web development: Once you're done using Notepad, DreamWeaver, FrontPage, or any other HTML editor to build your site, you will have a bunch of files on your computer. These will include .html files, which make up the different pages of your site, picture and animations files, such as (.jpg, .gif, .swf) and maybe even sound files (.wav). Each of these files needs to be uploaded to a Web
Server that will serve |
