WS_FTP - Changing file permissions on a remote host (CHMOD)

Product: Version: Platform:
WS_FTP Pro 9.0+ All

Question/Problem: How do I use WS_FTP Pro to change the permissions of a file on an FTP server?

Answer/Solution: In version 2006, you can change the permissions of a file under Properties for a UNIX file on an FTP site, provided you have permission.

  1. Select the file.
  2. From the right mouse menu select Properties. The permissions areas appear at the bottom of the Properties dialog. If the file is not on a UNIX server, the fields will be blank.
  3. Set any of the options and click the OK button.

In older versions, you can use the CHMOD command in WS_FTP Pro to change your remote files' permissions (if you are uploading to a UNIX host, and provided you have file-access permission).

  1. Select the file.
  2. Right-click the file, scroll down to FTP Commands then select CHMOD (unix) from the pop-out menu.
  3. Select any of the options and click the OK button.

This change to the file's permissions will occur on the remote machine, not on your PC.

Note that the CHMOD function does not show you the current permissions on a selected file.  It actually shows you (depending on the version of WS_FTP Pro you're using) the permission settings you last used.  This is by design.

The proper permission settings for your purpose depend on exactly what you want to do and who normally can read files by default.  Please contact your server's administrator for an answer to this.

Note: CHMOD -- the functionality to change permissions using a numeric value was re-added in version 8.01. If you highlight a file and choose   Properties you will see where you can add the numeric value
