Question/Problem: How can I change the timeout for the SMTP service?

Answer/Solution: The default SMTP service timeout is 5 minutes. For most installations, this should not be changed. The RFCs recommend that public mail servers not timeout before 5 minutes. To change this, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Windows Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
  2. Locate the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SMTPD32\Parameters key. If the SessionTimeout value exists, skip to step 4.
  3. Create a new DWORD value named SessionTimeout.
  4. Modify the data for the SessionTimeout value. Enter the number of seconds (in decimal) for the SMTP service timeout. 300 seconds is the default.
  5. Exit the Registry Editor and restart the SMTP service.
