IMail - Auto-response to senders whose mail is filtered by a Rule

Product: Version: Platform:
IMail All NT,Win2000,XP

Question/Problem: We use rules (at the host level) to prevent certain types of attachments to be sent to our users.

Mail with these attachments are deleted correctly, but neither the sender nor intended recipient receives notification that the mail has not been accepted. How do we enable notification, or preferably, bounce this mail back to the sender?

Answer/Solution: You can combine the use of the Info Manager with Rules.

Here are the steps to follow:
- create a user on that host that you will use as the Info Manager, for example, "bouncer"

In versions 7.10 or later, your Rules can filter directly to: bouncer@your-domain.com (or, any other email address).

For earlier versions:

- create a text file with Notepad named "bounce.fwd" and enter the address
bouncer@your-domain.com into the file. Save this file into each of your users'
mailbox directories
- set up your rules so that they filter to "bounce"

- under the "bouncer" user, go to the Info Manager tab
- enable the Info Manager and enter NUL in the field for "After responding,
forward mail to:"

Enter the text that you want to send to people who send messages that are filtered by your Rules.

Once you have done this, go to the "bouncer" mailbox in Windows Explorer and create a text file named "main.snt". Save the file and change the properties to this file to Read Only.

This is what this configuration will do:

- A user sends mail that matches your Rules

- IMail goes to the recipient's mailbox and finds the fwd file

- It then forwards the mail to bouncer@domain.com
- The info message gets sent back to the sender
- The message gets sent to NUL
