Question/Problem: How can I force mail clients to provide a password to send mail? Answer/Solution: The proper way to force authentication is to use "Relay Mail for Addresses." Any mail client on a machine whose IP address (or subnet) you do not have in your list of addresses will need to use SMTP authentication to send outgoing mail through your IMail server. *Outlook and Outlook Express* How to configure SMTP Authentication with Outlook Express on a Mac *Netscape Messenger* *Eudora* As for your web clients they will not be effected by relay option changes because they have already authenticated when they login. The most secure SMTP relay options are Relay for Addresses and No Mail Relay. (Note: These options will only affect those using mail clients i.e. Outlook, Eudora, etc.) 1) Relay for Addresses allows you to enter specific IP addresses or ranges of IP addresses. All users outside of the specified IP addresses would have to use SMTP authentication 2) No Mail Relay forces all mail clients to use SMTP authentication to send mail out from your server. Note, In versions before IMail 7.0 SMTP Authentication did not work for shared-IP-address Virtual Hosts which use an external user database. The Primary Domain must use the IMail user database for SMTP Authentication to work for shared-IP-address Virtual Hosts. If your Virtual Host does have its own IP address then SMTP Authentication works for any user database. |
